The handy brake fluid tester BW05 is the perfect measuring device to quickly and precisely check the water content in the brake fluid of vehicles both in the auto workshop and your garage at home. The BW05 is used to control the 3 most important brake fluid types DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1, and is very easy to use. After selecting the test mode for the respective brake fluid type, the sensors of the digital measuring device are immersed in the brake fluid. Within a few seconds, three color LEDs signal the result of the water fraction, the three-step spectrum of which is oriented towards that of traffic lights (see diagram). Green is also called free travel because the water content is less than 1.5%. Yellow stands for more frequent control, because the water content is already between 1.5 and 3% and red means the immediate change of the brake fluid with a share of more than 3%, since a failure of the hydraulic brake system is threatened. After the end of the control test, the BW05 is switched off, the sensors are cleaned with a dry cloth and the meter is kept in a dry place for its next use. And if the manual switching off was once forgotten - no problem: the tester turns off automatically after 20 seconds.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means: although it is in a closed circuit system, it absorbs water from the air. This happens in very small amounts, but at the same time so continuously that the liquid dilutes gradually over time: from a proportion of three percent water, it becomes dangerous for the driver of the car or motorcycle, since the boiling point of the brake fluid moves downwards - it overheats under heavy loads, forms steam bubbles and the brake pedal falls into the void. In addition, the increased water content also causes an increased risk of corrosion within the entire braking system - right up to the brake. It is therefore advisable to check the brake fluid periodically with the BW05 for every type of vehicle or machine equipped with a hydraulic brake system, especially in the case of older vehicles and those which are only rarely used, the recurring control measures are indispensable.
