Nebulizers are a safe and effective way to deliver medications to an infant. Always contact your child's doctor if for any reason your child appears to have more difficulty breathing after a breathing treatment. Nebulizers are primarily used for - asthma, COPD, and other severe breathing problems. However, it is also used for severe cases of nasal and chest congestion. It provides immediate relief by the opening of airways. It is important that the face mask is directly in front of the nose/mouth. Once a week, your nebulizer will need to be more thoroughly sterilized. After each treatment: Wash your hands thoroughly. Disassemble the nebulizer. Rinse the mask or mouthpiece with warm water for at least half a minute. Do not wash nebulizer tubing or compressor. Shake off excess water and place parts on a clean towel for air-drying. Reassemble the system and turn on the compressor for a few seconds for drying. A mask is used for children under 6 years old. A mouthpiece is used for children 6 years and older. Kids using a nebulizer should be sitting upright to help them breathe in and out. It might help them sit still if you can give them something to do while they receive their medicine.
